Silver Arrows Special

The most glamorous Grand Prix races of the thirties took place in the north African city of Tripoli.
As from 1939 the Grand Prix was limited to 1.5 litre cars. So Daimler Benz faced the challenge of developing a new car in a minimum of time. At a record pace they succeeded in building an entirely new racing car in only 8 months - the 1.5 litre W 165 with a 90 degree V8 engine and  remarkable power of 254 bhp. With this vehicle Mercedes and Hermann Lang gained a sensational victory, an outstanding result in the history of motor sport.

For 1979  private teams would have to carry the flag for for Porsche by competing with the former factory 936s and customer 934s and 935s. And carry it they did!

Lubrifilm Racing hired Herbert Müller to share the driving duties with Lubrifilm regulars, Angelo Pallavicini and Marco Vanoli. The Swiss trio drove a fantastic race, keeping the pressure on without relent. They held the lead in Group 4 from flag to flag, finishing the gruelling event more than 30 laps ahead of their nearest Group 4 competitor, another Porsche 934. The #82 car finished in 4th place overall, having covered 2,468.58 miles at an average speed of 102.85mph.

The real story is that the Lubrifilm Racing entry finished a mere lap behind the third place Hawaiian Tropic Porsche 935/77, and just two laps behind the second place 935/77 of Porsche Kremer Racing, both cars that many would have considered to be much faster! The outright winner was a very advanced Porsche Kremer Racing prepared 935 K3. The privately entered 936s, incidently, failed to finish.

victory in the Group 5 class is an impressive result by any standards. Even more impressive is the fact that the JMS Racing "X-Ray" Porsche 935 finished third overall, just 16 laps behind the second-place Renault and 27 laps behind the race winning Martini Porsche 936/77 prototype entries! In fact, the "X-Ray" 935 may well have secured outright victory had it not suffered a great deal of trouble: brake problems, fuel injector pump, and a turbocharger that needed to be replaced!

Due to a change of rules, Ferrari found itself devoid of a car suitable for the 1968 season of international sports car racing. Much to the surprise of the international racing world, however, by the end of 1968, the Scuderia had come up with a prototype Ferrari 312P for the 1969 season. The first sports car that they built for the forthcoming races had an open-top Spyder body and a twelve-cylinder, three-litre engine with a maximum output of 420 hp.

A showdown came on March 31, 1969, when the 312P was pitted against hotly-favored rivals, such as the Porsche 908, Ford GT 40 and the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 at the world-famous 12 Hours of Sebring endurance race. Eventually the 312P team of Chris Amon and Mario Andretti clinched an impressive second place in the overall standings and one class victory. The Sebring runner-up car with starting number 25 is now replicated by CMC as a high-end model in scale 1:18. This extraordinary miniature may well deserve a place of honor in your private “pits.”

The 1961 Formula 1 season had a new rule type. The racing teams had to switch their engines from 2.5 to 1.5 liters. Ferrari found itself in a very good position. They had developed a V6 mid-mounted engine with a 120 degrees cylinder angle and a maximum output of 190 hp. The new Ferrari 156 F1 had a very unusual front design. Pretty soon, people gave it the nickname Sharknose.

The Ferrari 500 F2 features heavily in debates about the greatest racing car of all time. That it is powered by a superb 2-liter 4-cylinder engine sometimes comes as a surprise to the initiated. But bolted into the benign Formula 2 chassis, the 500 F2 was unbeatable. Alberto Ascari won every circuit race in both the 1952 and 1953 seasons, taking the Championship title two years running!
